“It all started with a church fire”
In 1893, a Presbyterian Church was burnt down during the Panic of 1893. Hardly seems like the typical founding story, but things get interesting. Church members asked their fellow churchgoer George Draper Dayton to support the rebuilding effort by buying an empty lot next to the church. On the new land, he built the first Dayton Dry Goods Company store.
By 1911, the company had morphed into a department store selling an assortment of items. Dayton was known for his generosity and even established the Dayton Foundation in 1918. The foundation is now called the Target Foundation.
The untimely death of George in 1938 saw the company’s stewardship change hands to his son, George Nelson. In 1946, the company started the culture of donating 5% of all its pretax profits to charity. There was a change at the top again in 1950 after the death of George Nelson. His son took over the business.
Through the 1950s, the company expanded to new locations and begun offering commercial furnishings & decorations to businesses. In the 1960s, the company sought to enter the discount market. Target was born in 1962 with its first discount store and supermarket in Roseville, Minnesota. Walmart and Kmart were two other super chains established in the same year.
